Крысы рождаются совершенно голыми, глухими и слепыми. Единственным источником пропитания в их жизни является молоко матери.

Первый пушок на туловище начинает у них расти несколько дней спустя после рождения. Примерно с первой недели после появления на свет молодые крысы — еще слепые — начинают на территории гнезда совершать первые экскурсии. Спустя примерно 14 дней у них открываются глаза, и малыши начинают активно знакомиться со своим окружением. Это время для их матери очень напряженное, поскольку она пытается ограничить передвижение малышей. Слишком далеко копошащихся от гнезда молодых зверьков она перетаскивает в зубах назад в гнездо, причем она их переносит таким же способом, как и кошки своих котят.

Сделайте жилище крысы надежным, чтобы детеныши не смогли убежать! В этом возрасте молодые зверьки могут протиснуться даже через очень узкие промежутки прутьев клетки.

Как только малыши начинают знакомиться со своим окружением, они должны также познакомиться с тем, кто за ними ухаживает. Во время отсутствия крысы-матери вы можете положить руку в гнездо или даже попытаться осторожно взять в руку отдельных маленьких животных. Однако будьте осторожны: молодые крысы в возрасте примерно 2 — 5 недель могут "быстро стартовать", — у них отсутствует чувство высоты. Может легко случиться так, что молодой зверек спрыгнет с руки и поранится.

Во время своих путешествий молодые знакомятся с пищей своей матери. Они начинают дополнительно с материнским молоком питаться твердым кормом. Примерно с 4 —5-недельного возраста молодых крыс можно разлучить с матерью. Для их здоровья было бы лучше подольше оставить их с матерью. Разумеется, после наступления у молодых самцов половой зрелости их нужно отделить от своих сестер и матери. Некоторые молодые самцы уже в 6-недельном возрасте успешно спариваются со своей матерью! Хотя это скорее исключительные случаи, вы лучше не рискуйте!

Хотя крысы относятся к домашним животным, за которыми легко ухаживать, однако есть работы, которые необходимо делать ежедневно:

- Перед кормлением крыс удалять испорченный и испачканный подстилочным материалом корм.

- Давать зерновой и зеленый корм - не больше того количества, которое требуется ежедневно.

- Чистить поилки и миски для еды.

- Наливать свежую питьевую воду.

- Проверять скрытные места клетки, так как животные любят там прятать лишний корм. Многие грызуны имеют привычку метить запасы корма метить мочой, поэтому проведите там уборку.
Осматривать зверька. Не изменилось ли его поведение? Нет ли поноса? Нет ли выделений из носа и т.д

Каждый второй день надо:

Удалять на большой площади влажную подстилку в тех углах клетки, где животные мочатся.

Один раз в неделю нужно:

- Проводить общую уборку клетки.

- Полностью заменять подстилку.

- Промывать место обитания зверька ( клетку и предметы внутри ) горячей водой с добавлением в нее уксусной кислоты. Прежде чем животных поместить опять в клетку, необходимо все просушить. Не применяйте ароматических средств для чистки мест обитания животных, это может нанести им вред. В тех местах, где животные постоянно мочатся , для ослабления запаха можно использовать кошачью подстилку.
