Листья содержат гликозид ортосифонин, терпеновые сапонины, эфирное масло, органические кислоты, дубильные вещества, жирное масло, минеральные соли, следы танина, алколоидов и другие биологически активные вещества.

Почечный чай обладает мочегонным действием и применяется при воспалительных заболеваниях почек и мочевого пузыря, при камнях в них, а также при хронических заболеваниях печени и желчного пузыря, при подагре. 1/2 дольки брикета заливают 200 мл (1 стаканом) кипящей воды, кипятят 5 минут, настаивают на паровой бане 4 часа и процеживают. Теплый настой дают животным из расчета 1,5 мл на 1 кг веса, крупным собакам — по 100 мл, 2 раза в день за полчаса до кормления. Минимальный курс лечения — 1 месяц.

Настой малотоксичен даже при применении в течение нескольких месяцев. Однако при длительном применении настоя нужно делать перерывы на 5—6 дней или заменять его на время другими растениями, которые используют при тех же заболеваниях.
