Крапива двудомная - многолетнее травянистое растение из семейства крапивных, высота — до 1,5 метров. Листья черешковые, сердцевидные, крупнопильчатые по краям, покрыты жгучими волосками. Используют листья, которые собирают во время цветения. В листьях содержатся аскорбиновая кислота, каротиноиды, витамин К, витамин В2, пантотеновая кислота, эфирное масло, дубильные, белковые и другие вещества, соли железа, кальция, калия, сера.

Ранней весной в крапиве витамина С в два раза больше, чем в апельсинах, а провитамина А в ней столько же, сколько в моркови.

Крапива возбуждает аппетит, действует кровоостанавливающе, противовоспалительно, ранозаживляюще, усиливает основной обмен веществ, повышает тонус кишечника, сердечно-сосудистой системы и дыхательного центра, понижает содержание сахара в крови. Крапива способна восстанавливать гемоглобин и увеличивать количество эритроцитов не в меньшей степени, чем препараты железа.

Крапива является лактогонным средством: усиливающим образование молока.

Применяют крапиву для профилактики и лечения гипо-и авитаминозов, при желудочно-кишечных кровотечениях, при малокровии, воспалении почек, мочевого пузыря, при заболеваниях печени, желчного пузыря, желудочно-кишечного тракта, при кожных заболеваниях, сопровождающихся зудом, при мастите.

Отвар листьев крапивы используется при воспалении бронхов, болях в суставах, поносах, сахарном диабете.

Готовится он из расчета 25 г сухих листьев на 0,5 л кипятка. Дозы: до 0,5 чайной ложки — крупным птицам, кошкам — до 1 чайной ложки, собакам — 1 чайная — 2 столовых ложки 3 раза в день.

Крапиву, как источник поливитаминов, нужно давать животным круглый год. Дозы свежих листьев: собакам — 5—50 г, кошкам — до 5 г, птицам — до 1 г в день с мягким кормом. Предварительно листья хорошо промывают водой и измельчают ножом. Сначала дают немного, дозу увеличивают до нормы постепенно. Зимой из высушенных листьев делают порошок и тоже добавляют его в корм.

Крапиву, как лактогонное средство, можно использовать вместе с корнями одуванчика: из 1 части листьев крапивы и 1 части корней одуванчика делают смесь. 2 столовые ложки этой смеси заливают 0,5 л кипятка, настаивают 2 часа. Дают животным по 8 мл на 1 кг веса, крупным собакам — 0,5 л, в течение дня.

Крапива используется и при опухолях, расположенных на поверхности тела: 2 столовые ложки листьев заливают 1 стаканом кипятка, настаивают на водяной бане 15 минут, остужают, процеживают. Марлевые салфетки, смоченные этим настоем, прикладывают к больному месту.
