Кустарничек из семейства брусничных, высотой до 40 сантиметров. Листья очередные, мелкопильчатые, яйцевидные, светло-зеленые. Цветки мелкие, одиночные, розовато-белые. Ягоды черные, с сизоватым налетом.

Цветет черника в мае-июне, ягоды созревают в июле—августе.

Растет черника в сосновых и еловых лесах, особенно на ровных полутенистых местах.

Используют зрелые ягоды без плодоножки и листья, собранные во время цветения.

В ягодах содержатся дубильные вещества, яблочная, янтарная, лимонная, молочная, аскорбиновая кислоты, каротин, витамины группы В, сахара, антоцианы, пектиновые, слизистые и другие вещества. По содержанию марганца черника занимает первое место среди всех ягод и фруктов. В плодах и листьях обнаружены вещества, снижающие содержание сахара в крови.

При гастритах, острых и хронических энтероколитах, при поносе, подагре и диабете животным дают свежие плоды: до 100 г в день (крупным собакам) или настойку из них. 10 г сухих плодов настаивают в 200 мл холодной воды 8 часов (дневная норма для крупных собак).

При воспалении слизистой желудочно-кишечного тракта и при диабете используют также настой: 5 г мелко нарезанных плодов заваривают 200 мл кипятка, нагревают на водяной бане 15 минут, охлаждают при комнатной температуре. Собакам дают до 200 мл, кошкам — 2—4 чайные ложки, птицам - до 20 капель. При поносе чернику используют и в виде киселя.

При диабете применяют также сухие листья черники. 15 г их заварить 250 мл кипящей воды, настоять, укутав, 2 часа. Давать животным по 0,5 мл на 1 кг веса, крупным собакам — 2 столовые ложки, 3 раза в день.

При лейкозе 6 столовых ложек сухих измельченных листьев черники залить 1 л кипятка, варить на слабом огне 10 минут, настоять до охлаждения. Давать животным по 3,5 мл на 1 кг веса, крупным собакам - 1 стакан, 3—5 раз в день за полчаса до кормления. Курс лечения — 2 месяца. После 3—4—недельного перерыва курс повторить. В перерыве давать настой земляники или настой цветков гречихи

Свежие плоды черники являются также витаминным средством. Их дают животным свежими. Их смешивают с сахаром (1 кг плодов на 1200 г сахара), хранят в стеклянных банках со стеклянными крышками в холодильнике и дают зимой, весной. ¦
