Хотя иногда бывают ситуации , когда люди расстаются с любимым пернатым другом, например в связи с переездом в другой населенный пункт.

Покупая попугая, выясните у продавца его возраст. Молодая птица легче адаптируется к местным условиям, быстрее становится ручной и обладает большими способностями к дрессировке и обучению «разговору». Старые птицы, как правило, остаются дикими, плохо поддаются дрессировке или обучению «разговору», хотя известны отдельные случаи, когда попугай, просидевший в клетке более десяти лет, начинал говорить.

Как же определить возраст попугая? Точный возраст птицы после первой линьки, которая проходит в 3-3,5 месяца, определить практически невозможно! Если птица, по утверждениям продавца, младше этого возраста, то обратите внимание на следующие факторы:

- У молодых попугаев более короткий хвост. Но он очень быстро растет и примерно к 2-ух месячному возрасту достигает своей нормальной длины. Размер тела взрослых птиц 18-19 см

- Птенцы волнистого попугая способны летать уже примерно в месяц. И если продавец утверждает, что он "попугай еще не научился летать" также должно Вас насторожить.

- Глаза у птенца абсолютно чёрные и большие, а у взрослого попугая зрачок окружён белым кольцом. У старых птиц часто нет оперения вокруг глаз.

- У птенцов клюв черный. У молодых попугайчиков до 1,5 -2 месяцев на клюве имеется черный след, который исчезает сам по себе, когда попугайчик подрастает. Иногда бывает, что клюв перестает быть черным и раньше, в 20-25 дней, что особенно характерно для попугаев более светлых окрасов. У взрослых птиц клюв - соломенно-жёлтый.

- У 1,5 –месячного попугайчика оперение уже сформировалось, в этом возрасте птица должна быть, что называется, "перышко к перышку". Если продавец утверждает, что перышки "еще не до конца выросли", это должно насторожить Вас - птица может оказаться больной или старой.

- Оперение у молодых попугайчиков менее контрастное по сравнению со взрослыми птицами, оно как бы размытое. С возрастом оно становится более ярким и четким. В 4-6-месячном возрасте попугаи сбрасывают свой птенцовый наряд и обрастают взрослым оперением.

Пол взрослого волнистого попугайчика определяют по цвету восковицы: у взрослой самки она серовато- или голубовато-белая, или коричневая (обычно у половозрелой самки, готовой к размножению), а у самца - ярко-синего цвета, блестящая.

Наблюдая за поведением попугаев в клетке, вы заметите, что каждая птица ведет себя по-разному. Некоторые подходят к решетке, пытаясь привлечь ваше внимание. В такой момент часто можно понять, с какой конкретной особью вы будете ладить, а с какой - нет. В этом вопросе лучше всего довериться интуиции.

И наконец, нужно выбрать полноценную по внешнему виду и здоровую птицу. У здорового попугая перья плотно прилегают к телу, под перьями имеется густой плотный пух, глаза блестящие и живые. В дыхании и в голосе не должны присутствовать хрипящие и свистящие звуки, крылья должны плотно прилегать к телу. Вялые и нахохлившиеся особи, с наростами на клюве или ногах, с искривленными клювом и когтями или взъерошенными перьями для приобретения не пригодны. Особое внимание следует также обратить на грудную кость, которая может сильно выделяться из оперения. Возможно попугай в некоторых местах у себя на теле просто выщипывает перья. Такие птицы не пригодны: они явно больные.
