Тело блох прекрасно приспособлено к быстрому перемещению среди волос: оно сильно сплющено с боков. Вдобавок голова у блох маленькая и закруглена спереди. Все это позволяет им и легко проникать в шерсть, и проворно сновать в ней.

Размер блохи 2 до 4 миллиметров. Различен и цвет их: от светло-желтого до темно-коричневого и черного. Неодинакова и продолжительность их жизни, некоторые живут всего месяц, другие — не один год.

Хотя многие владельцы животных убеждены, что на их любимцев нападают блохи, живущие на траве, и даже называют их травяными, эти насекомые не могут питаться ни листьями, ни соками растений. На траву блох доставляют зараженные животные, и для них она — всего-навсего место, где они подкарауливают собак и кошек, на которых и прыгают.

Самцы у блох мельче самок. Самки откладывают белые овальные яйца, как правило, порциями не больше 4—8 штук. Яйца не клейкие, поэтому они не остаются на шерсти животного, а падают вниз: на пол, на подстилку, на землю. При благоприятных условиях через 8—14 дней из яйца выходит безногая, похожая на гусеницу, очень подвижная личинка с хорошо развитой головой. Тело ее покрыто волосками и щетинками. Самые подходящие места для развития личинок — подстилка, грязь в трещинах, пола, грязные ковры и т. д. Живя в пыли и мусоре, личинки питаются разлагающимися органическими остатками и фекалиями взрослых блох, которые содержат остатки непереваренной крови. В среднем через 12 дней развитие блохи заканчивается. Однако она может оставаться в коконе, если поблизости нет животного. Если же органы чувств сообщат блохе, что животное рядом, она мгновенно выбирается из кокона. В зависимости от условий окружающей среды цикл развития блохи длится от 19 дней до месяца и больше.

У кошек, пораженных блохами, периодически появляется беспокойство из-за сильного зуда кожи: слюна блох, попавшая в раны, вызывает аллергические реакции. Животное пытается поймать насекомых зубами, расчесывает кожу, и на ней появляются ссадины, царапины, возникает дерматит. Волосы выпадают и сваливаются.

Котята поражаются блохами сильнее и переносят заболевание тяжелее. У них развивается малокровие, они худеют. Если блох очень много, нередко наступает гибель животных.

Часто блохи перебираются от животных к людям, вызывая и у них зуд, раздражение кожи.

Блохи могут вызывать у котов ряд неприятных заболеваний.

Гемобартонеллез- инфекционная анемия кошек. Возбудитель гемобартонеллеза – Haemobartonella felis, которая вызывает поражение эритроцитов. Пути передачи инфекции–через укусы блох с инфицированной кровью, а также раны.

Диагноз ставят на основании обнаружения насекомых, их яиц и темных крупиц полупереваренной крови у корней волос. Излюбленные места обитания блох — межчелюстное пространство, верхняя часть шеи и живот.
